Don’t bring THEM home…

The next time that you travel, you might want to follow these tips:

Use a flashlight or UV light to inspect your hotel room for live bed bugs or evidence of activity such as fecal material, shed skins or bloodspots. If room is suspect, request a different room.

Using a business card and hand lens to examine the cracks and crevices around the mattress, bed frame, headboard (most will lift off the wall easily), carpet edges, picture frames, closets, nightstands, luggage racks and dressers to inspect for evidence.

Move the bed away from the wall or headboard if possible. The number one trouble spot in hotels is the headboard (if any). Number two are the picture frames directly above/behind the headboard area.

Don’t unpack leave your clothes in a closed suitcase, knapsack or zipped up clothing bag. You might want to tape the zipper or put it in a large clear plastic bag.

Keep your suitcase, etc. away from bed and don’t leave clothes laying about or in dresser drawers.

If traveling light, hang your clothing bag on the shower rod in the bathroom

Bag and Seal pajamas in a clear plastic bag and examine later.

Check yourself for bites or itching, although bed bug bites are not always immediately noticeable.

When you get home:

Unpack over a white sheet, directly launder washables in water over 140 degrees and then dry on high heat for an hour minimum. Dry cleaning is NOT as effective as previously thought, so save your money there… Consider a dry-vapor steam machine for yourself or a heating solution, such as a PackTite, Bed Bug Annihilator or BBFS’s Cimex SMART Cube.

Inspect and vacuum suitcases before putting them away. If you think you may have come into contact with pests you might consider having the items treated further off-site prior to unpacking at home.

Still Paranoid?:

Travel with large, clear plastic bags and enclose suitcase, clothing bag and all belongings (including what you are wearing prior to returning home (change in the car, driveway or garage) and seal with tape. Consider having items fumigated using Vikane gas fumigant, subjected to a controlled heat treatment of over 135 degrees for one hour minimum or treated with a topical, aerosol insecticide labeled for use on bed bugs.

BRICKUNDERGROUND TO HOLD MEETUP: “BedBuggedNYC”:  Thursday, September 15th, 6:30pm-8:30pm

–Event Co-Hosted by Neighborhood Social Networking Site Romio.com and Sponsored by Bed Bug Fumigation Specialists–

New York, August 22, 2011 –BrickUnderground, http://www.BrickUnderground.com, the online survival guide to finding a NYC apartment and living through the aftermath, has announced its second Meetup event, “BedBuggedNYC.”

The free, panel-style event and Q&A will take place from 6:30pm-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15 at the West 23rd Street penthouse headquarters of co-host Romio.com, the neighborhood social networking site.

In-the-know BedbuggedNYC Meetup experts will dispense the practical lowdown on bed bugs, including what bed bugs really look like and where to find them; the best ways to get rid of them; who pays for removal; how to get your landlord or board to do the right thing; and how to deal with the emotional upheaval and social stigma of infestation.

Meetup sponsor Bed Bug Fumigation Specialists will be on hand to explain fumigation using Vikane gas, provide steps to bed bug-proof your next move, and introduce attendees to The Fume Cube, an innovative portable solution for bed bug treatments in a multi-unit urban environment such as New York City. While The Fume Cube has been available and in operation in NYC since 2008, BBFS will introduce a second-generation Fume Cube for the first time at the Meetup.

The BedbuggedNYC panel will be moderated by BrickUnderground’s founder and former New York Times real estate contributor Teri Karush Rogers, who has been reporting on the city’s bed bug epidemic since 2009. Panelists include:

  • Gil Bloom, president of Standard Pest Management: An entomologist and pest control operator as well as New York Magazine’s “Best Bedbug Warrior of 2011,” and a former member of Mayor Bloomberg’s Bed Bug Advisory Board, Gil has also provided training to a number of city agencies. Gil will kick off the BedbuggedNYC Meetup with an overview on the essentials of  bed bug biology, prevention, detection and banishment of bed bugs.
  • Steven Wagner, real estate lawyer, Wagner Davis PC: An attorney extremely familiar with the tactical and legal complexities of blame-placing and exterminating bed bugs in apartment buildings, Steve will explain how to get landlords or boards to  properly address a bed bug problem, as well as talk about who is responsible for the cost of extermination and whether a landlord can refuse to rent to you if you had bed bugs in your last home.
  • Theresa Braine, journalist, bed bug survivor, and BrickUnderground’s Bedbugged! columnist: Fresh from a seven-year stint working as a journalist in Mexico, Theresa returned to NYC in late 2008, took over her brother’s apartment, and found a jarring surprise: A bed bug infestation. Reflecting on her yearlong battle to get rid of the bugs, Theresa will discuss the emotional and social side effects of having bed bugs, the coping measures that worked for her and what she’d do today if faced with the same situation again.

“The object of this Meetup isn’t to stir up fears, gross people out, or engage in policy debates,” says BrickUnderground’s Rogers. “Our panelists will tell you exactly what you need to know to protect yourself, your family and your neighbors from bed bugs and minimize the financial, social and emotional consequences of an infestation.”

Spots at the Meetup are limited, so participants are strongly advised to register in advance on BrickUnderground’s Meetup page, www.meetup.com/BrickUnderground-NYC-Real-Estate-Meetup/.  Light refreshments will be provided by Romio.com.

NPMA: 2011 Bugs Without Borders Survey – Executive Summary

NPMA, Bed Bug Fumigation Specialists, 2011 Bugs Without Borders Survey

National Pest Management Association

Recently, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) released an Executive Summary of the 2011 Bugs Without Borders Survey. Completed this summer, the NPMA and the University of Kentucky surveyed a nationwide sample of pest management professionals. We are pleased to share an executive summary, featuring the latest findings about the growing bed bug resurgence and referencing data from the 2010 Bugs Without Borders survey for year-over-year comparisons. This report highlights the key findings obtained from more than 400 pest management professionals who participated in this survey. A full report of the findings of the survey will be presented at PestWorld 2011 and shared in the November/December issue of PestWorld.

Some notes from the Executive Summary that BBFS found especially interesting:

Here are several key highlights from the 2011 Bugs Without Borders Survey:

1. Nearly all professional pest management companies have received bed bug calls in the past year. Respondents attribute the growth in bed bug infestations to increasing travel and movement of people, continued need for awareness, changing pest control products and methods, and bed bug resistance to available pest control products.
2. While nine out of ten respondents have treated bed bugs in apartments, condominiums and single-family homes in 2011 and 2010, in the past year reports of bed bug encounters have become more common in a many other places. For example, the numbers of professionals who treated college dorms, hotels, nursing homes, office buildings, schools and daycare centers, hospitals, public transportation and movie theaters for bed bugs have all increased compared to last year. More specifically:
• College dorms (54 percent, up from 35 percent a year ago)
• Hotels/motels (80 percent, up from 67 percent)
• Nursing homes (46 percent, up from 25 percent)
• Office buildings (38 percent, up from 18 percent)
• Schools and day care centers (36 percent, up from 10 percent)
• Hospitals (31 percent, up from 12 percent)
• Transportation (train/bus/taxi) (18 percent up from nine percent)
• Movie theaters (17 percent, up from five percent)
NOTE: Percentages denote professionals reporting treating bed bugs in specific locations and percentage increases from 2010.
Survey respondents also report finding bed bugs in retail stores, laundromats, libraries, restaurants and airplanes.
3. Bed bugs continue to be THE most difficult pest to treat, according to 73 percent of survey respondents. By comparison, 17 percent pointed to ants, nine percent said cockroaches and one percent said termites were the most difficult pests to control.
4. Six out of 10 respondents consider bed bug infestations a year-round phenomenon, while approximately 25 percent say that summer is the time of year when they receive more bed bug calls. As people tend to travel more during the summer months it may be likely they’ll have a higher risk of taking hitchhiking bed bugs with them from hotels and transportation sources to homes more so than at other times of the year.
5. When it comes to evaluation and treatment, visual inspection remains the most common method pest professionals use to determine if a bed bug infestation exists. However, the use of canines has grown from 16 percent to 43 percent in the past year.
6. Despite the many warnings that bed bugs are not a DIY pest, 25 percent of customers attempt to treat bed bug infestations by themselves before calling a professional. This number has decreased from the 38 percent who elected to treat bed bugs by themselves in 2010. Those who attempt to treat bed bug infestations by themselves often engage in dangerous and risky DIY practices putting themselves and their property at risk and are often ineffective at controlling the infestation.

Bed bugs are the size and color of a flat apple seed, like to travel and will hide in suitcases, boxes and shoes to be near a food supply (humans). In addition to the mattress and headboard, bed bugs can be found behind baseboards, electrical switch plates, picture frames, wallpaper, upholstery and in furniture crevices.

In other news, Vikane (Sulfuryl Flouride) Fumigation is 100% effective against all life stages of the pesky bed bug, including the hard to control egg stage. One single fumigation treatment to a structure and/or its belongings can eradicate the source population, prevent any pesticide resistant generations from continuing to unnaturally evolve, and make future preventative measures (such as a defined Integrated Pest Management program). DOW Vikane Fumigation is the only 100% effective eradication method for all stages of bug infestation that leaves no detectable residue.

July is Here and So are the New York Bed Bugs…and Ticks Too?

July is Here and So are the New York Bed Bugs…and Ticks Too?.

As expected, Assured Environments, New York’s largest pest management company, has had an increase in bed bug service requests recently. But the recent outbreak of ticks in New York and surge in tick-related calls within the past two weeks has surpassed the levels of the past 25 years and have left many in the industry and the area concerned.

As many had expected, and some others predicted, bed bugs have returned to New York this summer. However, the issue that really has Assured Environments perplexed is the uncanny amount of tick-related calls that have been received this year.

Assured Environments – the largest, privately owned pest solutions-company in New York – has seen bed bug resurgence again this summer. “Bed bug calls lagged in the early part of this year but are now starting to cause problems again for many New Yorkers,” explains Barry Beck, COO of Assured Environments. In June and July alone, Assured has handled over 330 bed bug service calls. “This increase of calls is not unexpected as the reproductive cycle of bed bugs is faster in warmer months, leading to more infestations and cause for concern.”

However, the pest control industry veteran is astonished with the latest outbreak of an uncommon NYC household pest: ticks. “In my 30-plus years in this industry I have never seen anything like this. We just received 4 independent calls regarding ticks yesterday alone,” says Beck. Already this year, Assured Environments has provided service for 8-times as many tick-related calls than in previous years.

A step towards bed bug free moving trucks

Original Post (By Teri Rogers and Margot Slade): Read it HERE

Moishe's Moving is one of the first New York Moving companes to announce a bed bug prevention plan

If you are moving, you may be understandably concerned about picking up bed bugs in transit.

Yet whether out of cost worries, denial or ignorance, New York City moving and storage companies have been slow to adopt procedures that cut down the risk of in-truck transmission.  So we were intrigued to hear that Moishe’s, the 30-year-old local moving company, recently announced a prevention program.

Among other things, the company has stopped wrapping furniture in blankets, which are an easy and obvious means of conveyance for bed bugs. Instead, furniture, mattresses and objects are wrapped in moving-quality, tear-resistant plastic bags sealed with heavy-duty tape.  That diminishes the risk of picking up bugs from the truck and also the chance that bugs will wander into the truck from infested furniture.   (No special precautions are taken with moving boxes, however.)

Moishe’s is also doing monthly canine inspections of each truck, and then fumigating trucks that come up positive.

So is this enough?

We asked entomologist and pest management expert Gil Bloom of Standard Pest Management in Queens. After calling up Moishe’s with a few questions of his own, he seemed reasonably satisfied.

“Unlike any other company that I know of, they apparently do have an organized, systemic way of addressing the issue,” said Bloom,  recently named #1 bed bug warrior by NY Magazine and deeply involved in the city’s efforts to battle bed bugs.

If you’re really concerned, Bloom notes, Moishe will perform a canine inspection of your truck the day before for an extra fee.

For ultimate peace of mind–and for anyone moving away from a bed bug issue–get the truck fumigated with all of your belongings inside.

“That way you pretty much know you are safe from transporting anything,” says Bloom.

UNNATURAL Selection: Bed Bugs now HARDER to kill!

Lab researchers have shown that today’s generation of bed bugs can survive 1000x higher the lethal dose of chemicals of only a decade ago. Recently, the Ohio State University released the first genetic study of bed bugs, which showed that bed bugs are developing a variety ways to resist the chemicals being used to control them. That means that the pesticides being used in the growing bed bug war are actually making our opponents STRONGER! Check out this video from Wall Street Journal Science Writer, Robert Lee Hought.

“While bedbugs are poised to become one of the major household pests across the United States in the coming years, we know very little about their genetic makeup and their mechanisms of resistance to insecticides,” said Omprakash Mittapalli, corresponding author of  the study and an assistant professor of entomology with the university’sOhio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster. OARDC is the research arm of Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

Repeated applications of the same killing agent (pesticide) spurs a form of evolution, called Unnatural Selection. Any subsequent generations of the same bed bug population (ie: 1 single BB egg survives or one egg laying adult survives) then the next generations have the encoded information on how to increase their resiliency to that same agent. Evidence of this can be seen in the regional practices and techniques within the Pest Control industry. In New York City, the bed bugs found there are 250x more resilient to the most common pesticides versus their cousins from the south in Florida. 250x more resilient!!! Experts say that this is one of the key reasons that bed bugs are making a resurgence worldwide.
